Speaking out
PNWFC members write letters, offer public comment, demonstrate to demand change, and serve on commissions and committees related to policing issues.
Here are just a few examples of our advocacy. Showing up is half the battle!
Feet to Fire Campaign
Pre-COVID, PNWFC participated in the national Feet to Fire Campaign started by P.O.S.T. Protect Our Stolen Treasures out of Detroit, Michigan by holding monthly peaceful protests outside county courthouses in Oregon. See the Feet to Fire declaration here.
“I miss my son.”
Maria Macduff, April Sabbe and Barbara Kenny spoke at a Tigard City Council meeting on March 14, 2023. They spoke a month after the release of the OIR Group critical incident review on the shooting death of Jacob Macduff by a Tigard police officer during a mental health crisis. See/hear the testimony here. {Time stamp 31:53}
The 12th of Every Month for Fifteen Years: Keaton Otis Vigil
In response to the racially motivated, racially motivated murder of Keaton Otis on May 12, 2010, Keaton’s Father, Fred Bryant, called for a vigil at the intersection where his son was killed by police on the next 12th of the month. At it, through tears, he vowed he would be at that spot every month until there was justice for Keaton. Fred Bryant died in 2013 from a stroke that many say was brought on by the stress of losing his son. But for 15 years the vigil has continued on the 12th of every month at NE 6th & Halsey, Portland, Oregon from 6-7pm, rain, snow or shine. Read more here
Invited Testimony to the Joint Committee on Transparent Policing and Use of Force Reform
On July 16, 2020, Barbara Kenny submitted written and oral testimony to a committee of the Oregon state legislature about the death of her child at the hands of police, her family’s lawsuit, and the lasting trauma. Watch her Zoom testimony here {starts at 1:30:00} with Committee Co-Chairs Representative Janelle Bynum and Senator James Manning.
PNWFC Statement regarding 2020 federal power grab in Portland, Oregon
Read the letter to U.S. Attorney Billy Williams demanding that the local District Attorney be responsible for prosecuting crimes committed on County-owned properties or buildings. Local prosecutors should not outsource their responsibilities to the federal court system for crimes that occur on County-owned property.
